Padres waste a lot of baserunners, come back to take lead and then lose on another frustrating night with runners in scoring position
Wednesday night plodded along and then picked up pace as it raced toward the inevitability of one of two extremes. It was the latter for the Padres, as the Twins walked them off 4-3 in the 11th inning. It was the Padres’ fourth loss in four tries in extra innings and came at the end of a night in which they had pecked and pecked and pecked and finally tied the game and then taken a lead.
Hader struck out the next two batters before intentionally walking Byron Buxton to bring up Max Kepler, who also struck out.Domingo Tapia, the Padres’ fifth reliever, came in to work the bottom of the 11th. With Max Kepler on second base, the Padres intentionally walked Carlos Correa to bring up Alex Kirilloff, who grounded a single under a diving Jake Cronenworth at first base.
Juan Soto began the seventh inning not by getting on base so much as jogging around them, and his home run helped hasten Pabloe Lopez’s exit one batter later after the right-hander had allowed two hits, walked four, hit a batter and struck out eight in 6⅓ innings. Soto grounded out to end the inning, and Twins closer Jhoan Duran set the Padres down in order in the ninth.
Soto led off the second inning by drawing a walk, stole second on the pitch that struck out Xander Bogaerts and then was thrown out trying to steal third while Matt Carpenter batted. He had seemed to begin his slide with a good chance to make the bag safely, but the same move that allowed him to be safe at second base – holding his left hand back while trying to reach around with his right – may have cost him at third.
The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on back-to-back two-out doubles, the first of which almost certainly would have been an out had it been hit to either of the Padres’ outfielders besides Soto. But Max Kepler went the other way with a line drive that sailed past Soto’s glove.
