Sizing up the Padres’ 40-man roster heading into the 2023 season: Trent Grisham won a second Gold Glove while suffering through his worst season yet at the plate

. Essentially, Grisham went 1-for-4 in each of the first two games of the season, 2-for-26 over his next six games to fall well below .200 and remained under the Mendoza line until Aug. 13. But he never pushed above .201 and hit .110/.215/.195 over the final 37 games, losing his start job in center tountil the Padres had clinched a postseason spot.

One reason is Grisham continued to look at more third strikes than his first season in San Diego . Grisham’s struggles with fastballs also continued as he posted a weighted on-base average of .310 against heaters in 2022, on par with 2021 and well off what he did in 2020 .
