Sizing up the Padres’ 40-man roster heading into the 2023 season: A fully healthy Yu Darvish turned in his best season since his first two years in the majors

But Darvish’s physical struggles with his hip and back barred him from participating and ultimately led to a disastrous second half as his ERA swelled from 2.44 to 6.65 after the break. Even with his strikeout rate dipping below 10 per nine innings for the first time in his career, from a WAR standpoint, it all added up to Darvish’s most valuable season since he posted 4.7 and a 4.6 WARs the first two seasons of his career. Darvish carried regular-season momentum into the postseason, allowing three runs or less in each of his four starts, including beating the Mets and Dodgers in his first two starts to help the Padres into the NLCS for the first time since 1998.
