San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. opens rehab stint with San Antonio Missions
San Diego Padres infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. bats in the third inning of Saturday’s Missions home game against the Wichita Wind Surge at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. Tatis joined the team on a rehab assignment. For the first time in more than 10 months, Fernando Tatis Jr. walked through the dugout slapping hands with teammates, then jogged up the steps and out toward center field.
Tatis wasn’t sure how long he’d be staying in San Antonio, but with Missions road trips slated for the next two weeks, the pair of games this weekend are potentially the only chances for fans in the area to see him in person. Tatis said he expected to return to a fielding position Sunday, and Missions manager Phillip Wellman said Tatis would be in the lineup at shortstop.
Tatis’ injury is believed to stem from a December motorcycle accident, though the fracture was not discovered until he started to prepare for the 2022 season ahead of spring training. "A lot of memories,” Tatis said. “A lot of tears, a lot of blood, whatever you want to call it. This is a field that’s one of those that shaped me very well, and I’m glad I could be back here.”
