Imran Khan survives a move to oust him as Pakistan's Prime Minister, getting a reprieve when the deputy speaker of parliament blocked a no-confidence motion as unconstitutional
Imran Khan has accused the opposition of being in cahoots with the US to unseat him — a charge that Washington has denied.
"I've sent advice to the president to dissolve assemblies," Khan said in a televised address, referring to national and state legislatures. He called on the nation to prepare for fresh elections. More than a dozen PTI lawmakers had also indicated they would cross the floor. The opposition needed 172 votes for the motion against Khan's government to succeed.
Some analysts say Khan has also lost the crucial support of the military — claims both sides deny — and Pakistan's army is key to political power.
