Paloma Faith has sparked a debate on whether co-parenting is ever really 50/50 and says men shouldn't be 'over complimented' for being a dad.
Paloma Faith has revealed she doesn’t like the word ‘co-parenting’ – as it implies it’s 50/50 when in reality, it’s not. The 42-year-old Only Love Can Hurt Like This singer is a mum to two daughters, aged nine and three, who she shares with ex Leyman Lahcine.
‘Unless, there are some anomalies and there are men who write to me and are like, ‘I don’t like the fact that you say that’. There are definitely some men pulling the main bulk of the work. But in the majority of cases, the unspoken silent mental load that a mother does, and usually time-wise, it’s not 50/50 either.
She added: ‘I’m so happy that they do that and they’ve got a lovely father and great. But let’s not over compliment them, because they do get that all the time – whereas I’m so grateful that he’s not an awful father, abandoner. And he shouldn’t be, let’s not over applaud them for actually parenting.’A poll by affordable online divorce advice platform SeparateSpace found 91% of respondents felt the mental load was not shared with an ex.
Jagroop Sahi, founder of conscious child shopping brand Kiddykind, agrees and of her co-parenting experience says: ‘Each day is so different, one day it might be 40/60, one day 80/20, another 100/0. I think you have to find a balance that works for you and your parenting partner and both be happy with the agreed arrangements.
