Reporter Amy Fenton found herself in a scary situation when her partner suffered a medical emergency at their home. Paramedics often get grief for their response times, but she says help arrived in a matter of minutes
People with the lifelong, incurable condition find themselves in a constant battle - being rendered barely able to speak when their blood sugar drops too low, or their vital organs being pounded if it rises too high.
We always have Lucozade in the house or glucose pouches, which he needs to drink if his levels go too low, and I am always listening out for any loud beeps which come from his phone to alert him of a potentially fatal low blood sugar. As I was trying to pour some Lucozade into his mouth his condition suddenly deteriorated and he became unconscious. I instantly called 999 and explained what was happening.
They were able to get a specific reading of his blood sugar - 1.2mmol/L. I'm no expert but I do know that this is a potentially fatal level. In a non-diabetic person blood sugar levels will be between 4mmol/L and 7mmol/L.
