With a unanimous vote, Maricopa County supervisors tentatively approved a $4.35 billion budget that reflects a fast-growing county with plenty of cash.
Despite the cut, the county will still see a slight increase in the amount of money it draws from taxes, driven by rising home valuations across the Phoenix metro area. It estimates it will take in $653.1 million this year from taxpayers, compared to last year's $637.5 million. That includes $13.3 million for the ongoing construction of a new shelter in the East Valley for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.
In October, the county's current East Valley shelter also saw an outbreak of distemper, a highly contagious viral disease that can cause coughing, decreased appetite and vomiting in dogs. Ultimately, 240 animals were infected, and several were euthanized to stop the spread. That ignited criticism from animal advocates, who accused Animal Care and Control of failing to protect and properly manage dogs in its care.
Penzone initially requested $5.7 million for the scanners from county supervisors, a number he said was potentially an overestimate. He pledged to use leftover money from the 2023 budget to pay for the purchase of the machines, so the money he is receiving now will go toward staffing and maintaining them.
