Fitzgerald was fired after 17 seasons with Northwestern University football after multiple allegations of hazing were brought forward by current and former players.

“Coach Desherow looks forward to continuing this tradition of excellence as he prepares for the 2023-2024 season,” the statement read. “Supporting him are many assistant coaches as well as parent volunteers, who provide an invaluable service to all of our athletic teams — indeed, our entire Loyola community — assisting with game day management, logistics, offering fresh insight, etc.”

Desherow referred additional questions regarding Fitzgerald’s role at Loyola to a school spokeswoman, who declined to comment beyond the school statement.Daniel I. Dorfman is a freelance reporter with Pioneer Press.
