EXCLUSIVE: Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said he was concerned opposition to the controversial legislation could escalate beyond angry messages posted on social media.

A Scottish Government minister has warned the level of "deliberate misinformation" being shared about new hate crime legislation could lead to people suffering "physical harm".

Harvie spoke out after the Hate Crime and Public Order Act prompted thousands of complaints from members of the public last week. "It's really dismaying, not just that there are some unpleasant people on social media, it's dismaying there are politicians who are deliberately playing to that gallery. "I hope some of the people who are stirring this up, as they think it's a fun way to have a pop at the SNP, or the Greens, I hope they reflect they are creating something extremely dangerous.

"Whether it's the rise of far right movements around the world, whether it's the effect of social media, it's certainly connected to deliberate disinformation that certain people are propagating with regards to this legislation.
