Manchester United legend Paul Scholes insists Matthijs de Ligt is not a 'massive improvement' on Harry Maguire for manager Erik ten Hag
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has given a damning verdict on Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
"He might be slightly better, but it’s not a massive improvement where you think, ‘Wow’. It’s like that with all the signings." The pedigree of De Ligt is there for all to see; Ajax’s second youngest-ever goal scorer, the youngest appearance maker in a European final, Golden Boy winner 2021, Netherlands debut at 17 - I could go on. It is easy to forget, given his frame and stature, that we are talking about a player who has just turned 25.
Imagine telling a young footballer: "You will captain your boyhood club, then play for the biggest club in Italy, Germany, and England - all before the age of 26." That's a good amount of experience United have added to their squad too. United fans will be hoping De Ligt can answer their defensive problems and so far, things look promising - he has struck a fine partnership with Lisandro Martinez. Their understanding was further apparent at Selhurst Park on Saturday when they gave Palace little to work with.
