History was made 48 years ago by the former Celtic forward and trailblazer when Scotland faced off against the Spanish
Scotland played in Spain on another Euro mission for glory 48 years ago, Paul Wilson came off the bench and stepped into a piece of history.
“I nearly scored,” recalled Paul – who also died in September 2017 at the age of 66 – in an interview in 2011. “But their keeper just got his hands to my effort. That was my only Scotland cap but I was so proud to get it. Join Record Sport's Celtic WhatsApp community! Wilson’s fifteen minute cameo at the Maestella turned out to the sum total of his Scotland CV. And yet it made huge imprint on the bigger football picture. Paul is still the only Asian-born player to be capped by Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland. That ensured Paul was the only Scottish player to score in four finals in a season. He netted in the Drybrough Cup win against Rangers, the League Cup triumph over Hibs, and two headers in the 3-1 Scottish Cup final win over Airdrie on May 3.
“Paul was so underrated,” said Locksley. “He was fast but he was two footed and a great scoring touch. He loved being at Celtic and when you think the really good youngsters he was part of, like Danny and Kenny, who Paul played with as a teenager. Kenny Dalglish went onto have great a career and move to Liverpool and Lou Macari to Man United and Davie Hay to Chelsea.
