Software billionaire Alan Trefler shares in a video interview how working in his father's antique restoration shop helped Pegasystems score one of its first clients.
Alan Trefler made his fortune through founding Pegasystems, which sells software that helps businesses engage with their customers better. So it’s no small bit of irony that when Trefler was trying to help Pegasystems win one of its first big customers, he employed a remarkably low-tech tactic: antique repair. to buy their software. Upon arriving, he encountered a distraught customer service manager: her daughter had broken a family heirloom plate and thanksgiving was coming up soon.
While the Bank of America employee rejected his initial offer to fly the plate across the country and repair it in his family shop, she acquiesced to Trefler mending the porcelain on her desk when he next visited their office. Trefler remembers jury-rigging one of the drawers so the plate lay at the right angle. “It was a very nerve-wracking moment,” he said. “My entire credibility would be whether I could salvage her relationship with this family heirloom.
Trefler said working in his father’s shop, he learned not only how to fix shattered glass, but how to run a company.One of the things that was always a source of pride for my father and also was for me in the early days in the early days of Pega is that we never missed a payroll.
