Penfield, N.Y. — More than a half century after Title IX became law, the prohibition of gender discrimination in schools, the original trailblazers are being honored. Penfield High School's Class of 1973 women athletes were brought onto the field during halftime on Friday evening to honor the courageous efforts from the 23 women athletes that played in nine different sanctioned sports, pioneering the sports culture we know today.
"We paved the way for sports, for high school girls and young women throughout Monroe County," said Leslie Apetz, Penfield Class of 1973, Sports Coordinator at Penfield High School. "Title IX needs to be protected. We need to safeguard and have equal opportunity for all girls and women." "It's just a representation of how powerful women can be when they put their mind to something,” said Lena Lipani, a senior at Penfield High School. “So being a part of that at Penfield High School is awesome, it's something special."
