The little-known program produced some of the most decorated athletes ever associated with Penn State.

The athletes had a rare springboard: A full-time coach. Free access to athletic facilities, nutrition and trainers. Major donors. In short, they received the same support as any other varsity athlete at Penn State. Shirey had no previous experience in track and field. He would rise at 6 a.m. for a training schedule that included three two-hour weightlifting sessions per week and two two-hour throwing sessions. Jordan coached him on technique, videotaped him and shared videos of successful throwers with disabilities. But the disruptions of the past three years have made it hard to build on that, he says.

With last week’s announcement, he says he’s glad future athletes will benefit from the program he knew four years ago. But he also feels “tossed aside,” saying the disruptions may well have cost him chances to compete in national or even international events, and a partial scholarship available to athletes who make senior nationals.

He began with weightlifting and eventually focused on track and field throwing events. He set a national record in the discus on his way to the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece, where he competed among 4,000 athletes from 130 countries.Hantz, 41, now is a health care lawyer who lives near Pittsburgh. He says support from a full-time coach and a big-time athletic department propelled him.
