“Permitting young workers to work excessive hours can jeopardize their safety, well-being, and education,” Wage and Hour Division District Director John DuMont said in a Monday news release. “Employers who hire young workers must understand and comply with federal child labor laws or face costly consequences.”

The minor employees worked at 13 McDonald’s locations, according to the Department of Labor. A child under the age of 16 was also allowed to operate a deep fryer, “which was not equipped with a device to automatically lower and raise the baskets,” the Department of Labor added. Santonastasso Enterprises, which is owned by John and Kathleen Santonastasso, paid a penalty of $57,332 over the violations.
