The powers will help the council cut down on illegal U-turns, driving the wrong way up one way streets and areas where right or left turns are banned

Drivers could be fined for making illegal U-turns or driving the wrong way up one-way streets if new enforcement powers are introduced by Nottingham City Council. The council says it is working to tackle congestion and disruption on the city's roads and wants to introduce new enforcement measures, trialling them initially in four key areas of the city centre.

The council is hoping to better monitor areas where right or left turns are banned as well as focus on yellow box junctions, one-way streets and pedestrian zones. It would also be looking at areas where driving is prohibited, no entry signs, illegal U-turns and where people incorrectly drive in a bus lane.

There is also a blocked paved pedestrian area on Shakespeare Street from its junction with Goldsmith Street, near Nottingham Trent University's city campus, where for 110m no vehicles are allowed as it is an area of high pedestrian activity. The final area the city council is hoping to improve is Victoria Embankment, where vehicles have been travelling through the recreational area in front of the war memorial and creating a risk to others in the area.
