Perspective: Nick Gervin's “Portlanders” was made during a time of difficulty in his life.

But, inevitably, as with so many things, probing deeper into its genesis unearths a more complex picture.There is no text accompanying the images in the book, so I only found out that there were more layers to pull back by visiting Gervin’s website, where he talks about the genesis of what would become “Portlanders.”
At around the same time of the assault, Gervin lost his job during the recession. The combination of the head injury and losing his livelihood led to swift spiraling into poverty and addiction. For 10 years, Gervin roamed the streets of Portland, Maine and compiled the images that you see in “Portlanders.” Of the time he spent making this body of work, Gervin says:
