Peru’s president dissolved Congress, raising the stakes in a political showdown between the government and opposition lawmakers
By Ryan Dube Sept. 30, 2019 8:03 pm ET LIMA, Peru—Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra on Monday dissolved Congress, raising the stakes in a political showdown between the government and opposition lawmakers.
Mr. Vizcarra said his measure adhered to constitutional requirements to close the opposition-led Congress. He accused legislators of obstructing the government’s anticorruption reforms.“Peruvian people, we’ve done everything we can,” Mr. Vizcarra said in a televised address. “However, it’s clear that the obstruction…will continue.”
Lawmakers quickly responded to Mr. Vizcarra by issuing a measure to impeach the president, accusing him of “moral incapacity.” Congress is controlled by legislators loyal to former President Alberto Fujimori, who dissolved Congress in 1992. Mr. Vizcarra assumed the presidency in 2018 after President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned amid corruption allegations, which he denies.Copyright ©2019 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
