Supe often sparred with Newsom at City Hall.
San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin slammed California Gov. Gavin Newsom for vetoing a state bill regulating self-driving trucks that had the backing of top city officials.
Peskin, a critic of Newsom since their shared time in City Hall in the early 2000s, spoke in favor of the bill at a Teamsters rally in July. He told The Examiner that the veto"signals that Gov. Newsom's administration is going to be reluctant to have any sensible oversight of this evolving new industry whatsoever."
Newsom also said he would direct the Labor and Workforce Development Agency next year to craft"recommendations to mitigate the potential employment impact of testing and deployment of autonomous heavy-duty vehicles." Following Cruise's involvement in multiple crashes that month, and amid the safety concerns of first responders, the DMV asked Cruise to cut its self-driving fleet in half, to 50 vehicles during the day and 150 at night, amid an agency investigation and until"Cruise takes appropriate corrective actions to improve road safety."
A Breed spokesperson said the mayor was unable to comment on the governor's veto. Spokespeople for Supervisors Connie Chan, Rafael Mandelman and Shamann Walton — all of whom attended the rally — couldn't be reached for comment prior to publication.
