CPS' renewal of charter schools is for a shorter time, forcing schools to devote time and resources to an unwieldy and bureaucratic renewal process.
There is a basic bargain governing public charter schools in Chicago. If the schools provide a decent education to children and manage their money well, the district extends their contracts and continues to fund them. If they fall short, they are shut down. In recent years, however, the bargain has tilted against charter schools. Many charter contracts are no longer renewed by the Chicago Public Schools board of trustees for the standard five-, seven- or even 10-year periods.
Like schools with similar populations, proficiency rates remain low and, as elsewhere, sank during the pandemic. Each year, several TMSOE graduates have matriculated to some of Chicago’s most competitive selective-enrollment high schools. The school has also raised millions in private dollars for after-school, tutoring and recreational opportunities during the school year and over the summer. Lastly, the school has become a nationally accredited training center for Montessori teachers.
