A vehicle crashed onto Phantom Fireworks, resulting in a fatality and a major structural fire.Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Patrick Voltaire deferred comment Tuesday morning to the Florida Highway Patrol, which continues investigating the fatal crash.
The Durango pushed the Tacoma through the U.S. 192 intersection into the Phantom Fireworks parking lot. The Tacoma driver began turning left — and the Durango kept driving southward and barreled through the building's glass front wall. The sport utility vehicle became engulfed in flames as fireworks ignited, the press release said.Two Phantom Fireworks employees who were working near the back of the store fled after the SUV crashed inside, and they escaped injury, West Melbourne Police Lt.
Voltaire said 30 firefighters from BCFR, Melbourne, Palm Bay and the Four Communities Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze. Built in 1989 with a wooden-truss roof, the 5,573-square-foot former restaurant was reduced to a charred, smoking shell filled with burnt debris.
