A Chicago pharmacist has been arrested and charged with selling 125 COVID-19 vaccination cards on eBay. If convicted, he could face up to 120 years in prison.
Aug. 19, 2021 -- A Chicago pharmacist was arrested Tuesday and charged with selling 125 COVID-19 vaccination cards on eBay, the U.S. Justice Department reported.
Tangtang Zhao, 34, sold cards to 11 buyers for $10 each in March and April, the Justice Department said in. He was charged with 12 counts of theft of government property. If convicted he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison on each count. Zhao was licensed as a pharmacist in Illinois and worked at a pharmacy in Chicago that administered the COVID vaccine.
“Knowingly selling COVID vaccination cards to unvaccinated individuals puts millions of Americans at risk of serious injury or death,” Special Agent in Charge Emmerson Buie Jr. of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office said in the news release. “To put such a small price on the safety of our nation is not only an insult to those who are doing their part in the fight to stop COVID-19, but a federal crime with serious consequences.
Lamont Pugh III of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services in the Chicago region said, “Fraudsters who engage in such unlawful conduct undermine efforts to address the pandemic and profit at the public’s expense. The health and safety of the public is our top priority, and we encourage people to obtain vaccination cards from their administering medical providers.”inside his vehicle.
