Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola warned his players that rotation may not be widely considered in their hectic schedule
Manchester City players have been reminded by Pep Guardiola that he will only rotate if all of his squad show they can contribute.
Guardiola left Rodri and Josko Gvardiol out of the team to face Brentford yet both were on before the second half began after a difficult start for the Blues. Kyle Walker and John Stones both struggled on their first start of the season while Phil Foden is still awaiting that after illness. If that points to how City can become better, Guardiola has warned his players that they will have to show him they are ready to play if they want to be considered for selection. Amid wider concerns in the game about the increased workload on footballers, City's manager - one of the best in the game for giving rest - said he would not hesitate to keep picking the same players if the rest of the group did not step up.
"When everyone is fit the competition is tough and they have to perform well," he said. "I want to rotate but they have to prove that they are ready when I rotate. When they don't perform well, I rotate less. "The business here is to win the game, not for me to give presents to players. I want everyone involved because it is the best way to avoid injuries and be fresh mentally and physically but they have to perform."
