Deferring big decisions about a new event district may prove politically expedient, but delays usually mean paying more down the road.
Last month, Keith Moen, executive director of the North Saskatoon Business Association, and former mayor Don Atchison suggested to city council that the event and entertainment district plan should be paused.in key decisions on the event district, essentially bumping them from later this year to next year. City administrative staff are asking for more time to prepare reports with “comprehensive” information about a funding strategy and a conceptual design.
Those votes were supposed to take place this fall and would, effectively, decide whether the city moves ahead with the district. According to the city’s previous estimated timeline, dating all the way back to May, Saskatoon residents were supposed to see a preliminary design and funding strategy this summer. That’s obviously not happening now. A report city council will consider this week suggests the key decisions should be bumped until early next year.
It’s not unreasonable for staff to ask for more time to prepare properly for what would likely be the most expensive project of its kind and perhaps the most consequential in Saskatoon’s history. There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
