The Belgian commended the officiating teams' handling of the situation
Philippe Clement has backed the officials for allowing play to go on before determining whether a foul had been made in the build-up Rangers opening goal in the 2-0 win against St Johnstone in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup .
Controversy arose just after the hour mark when Cyriel Dessers wheeled away in celebration after finding the back of the net, only for the goal to chalked off by on-field referee Matthew MacDermid who felt that he had fouled Saints defender Jack Saunders. After a lengthy delay in which MacDermid consulted the VAR monitor, the goal was awarded, giving the hosts the initiative to go on and kill the game, with substitute Ross McCausland rounding off the scoring in injury time.
Despite the deliberation, Belgian boss Clement had no qualms with the officiating team for relying on the use of technology to come to the right decision. Speaking to Premier Sports, he said: "I haven't seen the images back but I had the feeling that the referee felt that Cyriel had made a foul. "But if he is doubting or is not 100 per cent sure, then he has to let the play go on and then check with his team and VAR to make the right decision, and that is what they did. I haven't seen the images back but my staff have told me there was no foul by Cyriel.
"This is the way you want things done.. When you are doubting a split second decision, you don't stop the game but let it continue so you can make the right decision with all the technology that there is with VAR. In the end I think it is a good example of how to do it."
