Paul Merson's struggles with names are nothing new on Sky Sports. But there's no excuse for him mixing thinking Philippe Clement was Jaap Stam.
The Arsenal hero regularly trips up in his attempts to get player and managers' names right. But when the Rangers boss flashed up on screen, reacting to a decision in last Sunday's thrilling 3-3 Old Firm draw with Celtic at Ibrox, "Merse" outdid himself in the getting it wrong stakes. The Soccer Saturday panel were discussing the confusion that John Beaton caused in ruling out Cyriel Dessers' strike. The Nigerian thought he'd levelled to make it 2-2 in the second half, but an earlier foul by Tom Lawrence on Tomiki Iwata was flagged by VAR, and the goal was chalked off. But Beaton appeared to point to the centre circle, which sent Ibrox prematurely mad. However, the whistler was pointing to where the foul had taken place.
The celebrations were cut short, with even Clement initially thinking it was all square and that the goal had been given. Former ref Mike Dean was casting his eye over the incident and said: "He's looked at the screen and he's disallowed it, but he's pointing as if he's given the goal. "The reaction of the stadium though, they all think he's given the goal. You don't just point to where it is."Whether it was an attempt at humour that fell flat or Merson genuinely think the former Man Utd and Lazio colossus genuinely manages the Ibrox club is unclear. But given his previous and the general lack of interest in our game from Premier League obssessed pundits, you wouldn't bet against the latter.
