The Phillies’ pitching depth will be tested after Zach Eflin got put on the 15-day injured list with a bruise in his right knee.
Other than Bryce Harper breaking his thumb — and maybe even including that — the Phillies can least afford to lose any of their five starting pitchers.
Eflin, who was scheduled to see a doctor before Tuesday night’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves, will take about five days off and miss at least two starts. The Phillies haven’t put a timetable on his return. But based on interim manager Rob Thomson’s comments, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s longer than 15 days.“Once the pain is gone, then we’ll start ramping him back up, ” Thomson said.
Doctors didn’t find structural damage to Eflin’s knee, so he started June 19 in Washington and last Saturday night in San Diego, lasting two innings and five innings , respectively. Eflin conceded after both games that he was compromised. He said his knee “didn’t feel great” in the fifth inning in San Diego.
