William Hite announced last year that he would not renew his contract and would vacate his position this August following a decade at the helm.Watlington was among three finalists for the post, none of whom had ties to Philadelphia. He is also served as chief of schools in Guilford County, which includes Greensboro.
Leticia Egea-Hinton, vice president of the district’s board of education, said earlier that they each had “decades of experience working with, and within, diverse communities, and each is fully aligned with the priorities we stated around student achievement."
