For a driver to receive a long-term contract extension just 15 races into his F1 career may seem like a premature move by McLaren. But in the case of Piastri, it is entirely justified.McLaren fought hard to secure Piastri’s services for 2023, winning a legal battle against his former team, Alpine, and paying off Daniel Ricciardo’s contract to put the young Australian in the car. It was a big call. Yet it was one that has paid off handsomely.
McLaren’s happiness in his performances paved the way for a long-term deal to be struck early on. It’s not the first time the team has moved quickly with a young prospect: Norris signed two contract extensions in the space of nine months across 2021 and 2022, the second deal tying him to the team until the end of 2025.
