The Pittsburgh Pirates players seemed to tune out manager Clint Hurdle, especially during a disastrous second half of the season.

What made matters worse than the awful on-field performance is that Hurdle lost control of the clubhouse during the season’s final three months. The capper came when Vazquez, the two-time All-Star closer, was arrested on felony charges including sexual assault of a minor. Hurdle became friends with Nutting. Multiple player expressed over the years that they didn’t feel Hurdle had their backs because of his close relationship with the owner and was more concerned about keeping his job.
However, the players’ effort is a direct result of the manager. The Pirates’ attention to detail has been lacking in recent years and that was never more evident that the second half of this season when mental errors on the bases and in the field seemed to be daily occurrence. Though it ended badly for Hurdle, it should not completely detract all the good that was accomplished under his watch.
