A plane’s engine caught on fire right before taking off from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Sunday morning, according to airport officials.
A spokesperson with AUS Airport said the Southwest Airlines plane was on the runway when the problem started. The engine failed, then caught on fire.The plane was able to taxi to the maintenance area. The passengers stayed on the plane temporarily as the pilot waited for a gate to open up.Southwest Airlines provided the following statement:
The Crew of Flight #456 from Austin to St. Louis aborted takeoff due to a reported issue with one of the aircraft’s two engines. The aircraft safely returned to a gate. A different aircraft will continue the flight to St. Louis while the original aircraft is being taken out of service for a review. We appreciate our Customers’ patience as we work to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible.
