Nottingham has seen its fair share of ambitious plans over the years, whether it be the erection of iconic buildings such as the Council House or major infrastructure projects like the tram network. But for every project that's succeeded, there have been others that never made it off the drawing board.
A new plan for a limited redevelopment of some of the centre was approved in 2015 and promised a nine-screen cinema along with new leisure and restaurant spaces. Many of the 1970s-built mall's existing shops, including Boots, Wilko and BrightHouse, were also due to receive cosmetic improvements. But the area, of which half still remains a building site, has suffered significant funding setbacks which would go towards the wider project. The city council declared effective bankruptcy last year and lost out on landing £20m of Government Levelling Up cash in November, the third time it had been overlooked.
However, the plans were dropped a year later after the city council drew up a plan to meet clean air targets through other methods. This included converting taxis to cleaner diesel engines, retrofitting 180 NCT buses and replacing its own heavy vehicles with electric and low-emission vehicles. The top floor was closed in April last year, leaving the remaining traders and their customers worried about the tired shopping complex's future. Earlier this year, plans were unveiled to transform the arcade into student accommodation, while keeping the shop units on the ground floor.
