The Memorial City area, as we know it, is about to undergo a change.
MetroNational is reimagining a 27-acre piece of Memorial City Mall into an open-air mixed use shopping and lifestyle destination west of Houston. In one of the biggest redevelopment projects in Memorial City’s history, Houston developer MetroNational is reimagining a key piece of the 1.7 million square-foot mall that could set off a wave of changes for the affluent community west of Houston.
Opening in 1966 — four years before the Galleria — construction of the original Memorial City Mall 13 miles west of downtown Houston fomented a wave of real estate development in the area as houses, hotels, hospitals, shops and offices were built in and around the “city within a city.” Memorial City has grown to 300 acres from 200 in the 1960s, according to the MetroNational’s website.
A parking structure would provide 1,000 spaces to service the new town center. At a future date, MetroNational intends to redevelop about 150,000 square feet of the enclosed mall, in a project that would include an updated entrance, new facade and green space.
