Officials have asked the New Jersey Turnpike to move an exit to connect to a larger state highway as part of a widening project.

Also known as the Black Horse Pike, officials say this 18th century route can't handle traffic volumes and want Exit 3 moved to connect to nearby Route 42.The historic Black Horse Pike can be thought of as the five pound bag that’s being crammed with 10 pounds of stuff.
Relocating Exit 3 to Route 42 would be a direct route for that traffic, he said. Now, traffic traveling between the Turnpike and Route 42 has to travel 13 miles on the Black Horse Pike. Of the 385 crashes that took place on Route 168, a total of 58 happened in the 2.16 mile section in Bellmawr, that has an average daily traffic volume of 23,200 vehicles, according to 2020 New Jersey Department of Transportation crash records , which are the latest available. Black Horse Pike has two travel lanes with a turning lane in the center through Bellmawr.
“A lot of trucks come through,” he said. “Bellmawr is the crossroads, the Black Horse Pike, Turnpike, I-295 and Route 42, everything comes through here.” would add a lane in each direction for a 37 mile section of the highway that hasn’t changed since built in 1951. It also includes making capacity improvements and road reconfigurations at Exits 1, 2, 3 and 4.
