La cifra oficial de fallecidos en el incendio forestal más letal de Estados Unidos en más de un siglo se incrementó en una persona, hasta 99, luego de que la policía del condado de Maui encontró restos adicionales.

Los restos fueron recuperados el 12 de octubre en Lahaina, indicó la vocera de la policía, Alana Pico, en un correo electrónico el viernes. Una autopsia y un examen forense verificaron que no pertenecían a una víctima ya localizada antes. Por el momento, la policía ha identificado los restos de 97 personas que fallecieron en el incendio del 8 de agosto que barrió gran parte de Lahaina, una histórica ciudad en la costa occidental de Maui.

Los restos de dos personas siguen sin identificar y otras seis continúan desaparecidas. El incendio comenzó en una zona de pasto en las colinas de Lahaina.
