BREAKING UPDATE: Police have identified the man they say shot a Phoenix officer Friday morning near 7th and Southern avenues. The officer involved is still in the hospital recovering.
PHOENIX — Phoenix police have identified the man that was taken into custody in connection to a shooting Friday morning that left an officer hospitalized.
— Phoenix Police March 24, 2023 At about 4:45 p.m., aerial footage showed a SWAT team take Lopez into custody. He was seen climbing out of the roof of a building where he was met by police. Lopez climbed down from the structure and was placed in custody at gunpoint. Officials say the man was involved in a shooting that left a Phoenix police officer injured.According to police, less lethal rounds were used to bring the suspect down from a roof where he was seen.
The officer was able to get to safety and provide additional information to other officers that were already en route to the scene. A second officer was bitten by a dog while at the scene and is being treated at a hospital, according to multiple sources. Police officials say that the officer has since been released.
