Police chiefs are bracing for the possibility that Wednesday could be the worst day yet in two weeks of disorder as extremists plan gatherings at as many as 30 locations to target law firms and asylum help centres
Police were last night urgently increasing security for immigration lawyers and advice groups, including putting in place plans to deploy “quick reaction” mobile units of riot officers, asSenior officers are taking seriously the threat to 39 locations across the country – linked to offering legal or practical assistance to refugees and asylum seekers – after a list was distributed by extremists via the Telegram messaging platform with a disturbing call to action for Wednesday night.
The credibility of the Telegram list, posted on an encrypted online forum with a membership that had risen exponentially from less than 200 late last week to more than 13,000 early this week, is being assessed by specialist officers as chiefs prepare for as many as 30 far-right gatherings on Wednesday night.
A police source said: “This is a complex operation designed to gather and share intelligence, and then move very swiftly to confront disorder and arrest those responsible.”The Law Society said it had advised members appearing on the Telegram list to take additional security precautions, including asking staff to work from home where possible and vacate their offices by 8pm.
