A 16-year-old boy has died after entering a canal in Lancashire. Police have launched an investigation after pulling the youngster's body from the Leeds-Liverpool Canal on Saturday evening .
Emergency services descended on the canal, in Burnley, after being called at 4.20pm. Lancashire Constabulary says the boy had entered the water near Empire Way. It sparked a frantic search in the water, Lancs Live reports. But tragically, the teenager's body was recovered shortly before 7.20pm and he was pronounced dead at the scene.A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: "A 16-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this distressing time. Our inquiries are continuing.
The tragedy unfolded on a day which the Met Office confirmed as officially the UK's hottest, with a temperature of 32.7C recorded at Heathrow. Sunday became the seventh consecutive day of 30C weather in the UK with 32.5C recorded in Cambridge, setting a new record for the most consecutive days with temperatures above 30C in September.
