Cheshire Police said the force would 'continue to support the witnesses in the case'
Police have responded after Manchester City star Benjamin Mendy was acquitted of six counts of rape. The French footballer, 28, was unanimously found not guilty of the allegations, which concerned four women. They were alleged to have been committed at his mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire.
The judge discharged jurors on Friday, after they had deliberated for 67 hours and 17 minutes. Mr Mendy was cleared of a further count of rape earlier in the trial on the directions of the judge, after a ‘sex video’ emerged of the complainant having 'consensual, enthusiastic and willing sex’ with his co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 41, at a time she claimed he had raped Mr Matturie.
The same woman had also accused Mr Mendy of rape. The French defender will face a retrial in June on the allegations jurors were unable to agree on. He will also face a retrial on the charges jurors were unable to reach verdicts on. After the verdicts, Detective Chief Inspector Kate Tomlinson, of Cheshire Police, said: "Following a full and thorough investigation into allegations of rape and sexual assault made against Mendy and Matturie a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who directed that a prosecution case should be pursued.
