Authorities searched for a possibly armed suspect at the university's Livingston Campus in Piscataway.
“After a thorough search of the area of Metlars [Lane] and the surrounding wooded area, by air and with the assistance of a tracking K9, it appears that the suspect is no longer in the area. All police units have cleared from the scene,” Piscataway police said on social media.
The search began after a person fled from a vehicle crash and ran into a wooded area on the Rutgers Livingston Campus, according to Rutgers Police Chief Kenneth Cop. “In response to this action, police personnel from multiple agencies established a perimeter and thoroughly checked the woodland and surrounding campus with negative results for the subject. As a precaution, the RUPD and Piscataway Police Department will increase patrol activity in the area,” theNews of the search spread after Rutgers officials issued an alert on social media and via text message about a search for a “possible armed subject” on campus around 3:40 p.m.
“Livingston Campus has been checked by police personnel with negative results for the subject. Please return to normal activity,” Rutgers policePiscataway police initially alerted residents about an accident investigation and person fleeing near Metlars Lane and Suttons Lane, close to Rutgers. A Rutgers spokesperson said the university’s police department assisted in a Piscataway police investigation and referred questions to that agency.
