Speaking to Sky News political editor Beth Rigby, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said donors to the party have no role at all in making policy amid Tory accusations that his plan to ban new oil and gas licences is as a result of taking money from Just Stop Oil backer Dale Vince.
He said he's held talks with the sector and laid out his ambitions if he reaches Downing Street, and has been told the plan is"tough but doable". He said his father was in engineering and manufacturing, which means he feels"passionately" about British jobs.A Labour source has told Sky News that they do expect the Commons to vote on the privileges committee report later today, despite many MPs likely being absent.
Ardent Boris Johnson ally Brendan Clark-Smith tweeted a short while ago that although he is"100% against today's appalling recommendations" and"fully intended to vote against", he will be joining his Johnson-supporting colleagues in boycotting the vote. She said:"So yes, there are legitimate criticisms of Boris, but there is also a group of people who quite like the status quo the way it is, don't want things to change, didn't want Brexit, don't want to see economic reforms."
The constitution could protect workers' rights to strike, guarantee healthcare that is"free at the point of need", and rule out Scotland as a home for nuclear weapons. The first minister insisted the"vision" in the Scottish government paper"contrasts quite starkly" with Westminster, where he said"rights are being systematically eroded".The Met Police has issued a statement this lunchtime confirming that it is"assessing" new information received on gatherings in parliament, Downing Street, Chequers and the Conservative Party headquarters.
The force added:"Our approach to the assessment of these allegations has been consistent throughout, enforcing the law carefully, thoroughly, proportionately, impartially and without fear or favour."Rishi Sunak has been speaking to international leaders this morning as he seemingly tries to ignore the looming Commons debate on the privileges committee that found Boris Johnson deliberately misled parliament multiple times.
Mr Sunak also had a phone call with the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, in which Downing Street said the pair also discussed the conference and"efforts to galvanise international support for Ukraine and drive long-term public and private investment".
The prime minister's official spokesperson told reporters this morning:"I don't think we know yet whether there will be a vote on this issue. Pressed again on whether Mr Sunak could appear in the Commons, the spokesperson said:"Currently you've got his schedule for today which doesn't include attending parliament, but obviously we will see how the timings play out."Tories label Starmer's energy policy the 'energy surrender plan' - as Greenpeace welcomes it
