Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Suriname, Guyana, Brazil and Colombia in a bid to demonstrate U.S. support for the region’s democracies
From Thursday to Sunday, Mr. Pompeo will visit Paramaribo, Suriname; Georgetown, Guyana; Boa Vista, Brazil; and Bogotá, Colombia. He will conclude his trip with a domestic stop, in Plano, Texas.
The secretary is scheduled to meet with Surinamese President Chan Santokhi and members of his cabinet for talks on potential energy and security partnerships between the two countries. Mr. Pompeo will meet with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali and his cabinet, as well as with Irwin LaRocque, secretary-general of the Caribbean Community, known as CARICOM.
While in Boa Vista, near the Brazil-Venezuela border, the secretary is slated to meet with Venezuelans taking refuge in Brazil. In recent years, the Venezuelan economy has collapsed due to mismanagement from its authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro, political turmoil and a U.S.-led sanctions campaign aimed at his regime and the country’s once-prosperous oil sector.
