Coral trees pose a falling hazard as a result of high salt content in soils, a situation exacerbated by recent storms, according to officials

The Port of San Diego has started cutting down ailing coral trees on its bayfront to prevent falling hazards. The twisting, tropical plants aren’t well suited to the brackish soil, a situation exacerbated by recent storms.

“Over the years, the coral trees have absorbed the salty water, causing them to dry out and become weak, which can lead to fallen trees and limbs and poses a potential safety risk and potential personal harm and property damage,” Brianne Mundy Page, spokesperson for the port, said in an email Wednesday.

The agency plans to remove a total of 72 coral trees across Harbor Island Park, Spanish Landing Park, Tuna Harbor Park, Embarcadero Marina Park North and Chula Vista Bayfront Park. For each one eliminated, officials plan to plant several new trees, such as Canary Island pines, African Tulip trees, flowering red coal gum trees and other species.

The port is now working on securing the new trees, with planting slated for this fall. In the meantime, crews will focus on the grueling work of not only cutting down the coral trees but removing their stumps and above-ground roots. “The removal of the trees has given the Port an opportunity to update the landscape that will ultimately increase species and color diversity within the port’s urban forest,” said Mundy Page. “The project will also increase carbon sequestration, enhance the use of public space and increase usability of the parks as the large, above-ground root areas associated with coral trees limit available ground space.
