Initial reports suggested that damage and deaths were severe throughout the Marrakech-Safi region, which is made up of a mixture of cities, small towns and open land, with a population of 4.5 million, according to state figures. In 1960, a magnitude 5.8 temblor struck near the Moroccan city of Agadir and caused thousands of deaths.
