Young Lee dreamed of being a lawyer with a wardrobe full of designer suits: "I was sitting there in a full look, but I was a nerd." At Clark Atlanta University, a historically Black college, she had her LSAT scores and recommendation letters all lined up. Her sister and mother both modeled, but it wasn't something she had ever really considered.
Instead of blazers, she's draped in Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, and Fleur du Mal lingerie . What would have been her approach to the bench is now a strut to the end of the Tommy x Zendaya runway, her G-cup breasts bouncing and her full thighs jiggling.
Like any Georgia peach transported far from home, Lee's journey has left her with a few bruises. "I spent so much time early in my career explaining how I feel, or trying to, in a nonconfrontational way," she says. "If you aren't smiling, it's a problem. There's that perception that Black women have to come and dance for their time and space. And that's not happening.
Lee is a warrior for Georgia girls like me, who grew up eating collard greens and cheese grits, coveting Chanel, and who rarely see accurate representations of ourselves outside of our own circles. "I'm in an industry that was not set up for me at all....and not just because of my size, but because of my race, my hair, my skin," Lee says. "I have to fight to prove that I — and the people that look like me — are beautiful.
