In the race where the top 10 finishers advanced to join runners from three other sections of the country next weekend, the San Diego girls moved right up with the front-runners and never wavered.Ventura’s Sadie Engelhardt, one of the nation’s best, immediately took the lead after finishing second a year ago and never looked back, winning by 22 seconds at 17:43 over the hilly 5,000-meter course in ideal weather.
“I tried to go fast down the final hill to catch , but I couldn’t do it,” said Dailey by phone. “The top 15 finishers at Nationals are All-Americans and that’s my goal.” “I ran here a year ago and was like 81st,” said Sanchez, an Alpine resident who ran 15:33. “I stayed after and watched the awards ceremony, vowing I’d come back and qualify this year.Bountiful Utah’s Samuel Hansen won the boys race featuring runners from 12 Western States in 15:20 before a pack of nine runners, separated by just eight seconds, charged home.
