Monte Vista erased a two-point deficit with a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter en route to a 57-50 upset win Tuesday night over De La Salle, the Bay Area News Group’s third-ranked team.
The No. 15 Mustangs , playing at home in their East Bay Athletic League opener, never allowed the Spartans to get closer than four points after completing their run. Senior shooting guard Jake Fields led the way for Monte Vista with 24 points. The 6-foot-4 Fields is headed to St. Mary’s College after this season. Sophomore guard Alec Blair had 25 points and six rebounds for the Spartans.
The game was close throughout. Monte Vista led 31-26 at the half, but the teams went into the fourth period tied 36-36.Both teams were playing good basketball coming into this contest. Monte Vista is 6-1 over its last seven games, the only defeat being a seven-point setback on the road against No. 19 Priory. De La Salle was 8-1 in its last nine games before the loss to Monte Vista.
