Plans are made and the park’s fire crew is ready, but it may be a while before this season’s prescribed fires begin in Indiana Dunes National Park.
Micah Bell, the national park’s fire prevention and education specialist, wouldn’t hazard a guess. “It could be any time between now and just before Christmas,” he said Thursday, another in a string of damp days. “We need it to dry out a bit.” A good frost also would help, by laying a carpet of dead leaves on the ground to help the fire along. The National Park Service fire team plans to conduct five prescribed fires, covering more than 1,400 acres in the dunes park, this fall.
A prescribed fire there last year had to be called off when the weather became too hot and windy. A small fire nearby is planned for 25 acres at the Green Belt Parking Lot, off Mineral Springs Road near the South Shore Line tracks. Another small fire is planned for 77 acres around the Dunewood Campground near Beverly Shores, where leaves and fallen branches on the ground would be burned to reduce the fire danger if fire escapes a fire ring during next year’s camping season.
