Despite the name, L'Oréal Paris Elvive 8 Second Wonder Water doesn't contain any water at all; it is a unique lamellar fluid. Cartier watch. Mejuri bracelets.
"Eight seconds — that almost sounds too good to be true," said hairstylist DJ Quintero. "How can any product absorb that quickly?" Then he tried it — and found that the name,, is no joke. "Your hair softens instantly in your hands, like silk. I have not experienced anything like it," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson .isn't a conditioner, per se. It's not an oil, a serum, or a mask. It is something entirely new to us in hair care: a lamellar fluid.
But the product doesn't stick around: The positively charged amino acids and lipids cling only to negatively charged spots where your hair is damaged, effectively — albeit temporarily — making hair stronger, shinier, and soft as silk without overcoating it. In our tests, Wonder Water softened thick curls, fine, straight hair, and frayed ends.
"It's been five months since my last haircut — a pandemic will do that — and the ends are so fried," says one tester. "I applied this on wet hair after not washing for a week, and seconds after rinsing it was so smooth and the ends were very soft. It was like getting a salon treatment in my own home and the results lasted for about a week."
To make sure Wonder Water would soften all hair textures instantly, L'Oréal's chemists developed more than 1,000 formulas and tried each one on 1,000 testers from six countries. The eight-seconds claim is a bit less precise — it actually works immediately on contact. But they tested how long it takes for people to massage it in and that, on average, took eight seconds.
